Guess it depends on your definition of overrated... who rates all the songs? Very personal preferences/judgements. Seems we've been down this path before.

Agree with august_wst and strat: Lovelight and I would add Schoolgirl, but that might just be fatigue. If they kept these to about 6 minutes I would enjoy them more. My other nominations would be Black Peter and Round & Round, never do much for me. On the other hand, Dark Star is fully deserving of its rightful place as a seminal tent-pole in the GD canon. It is an amazing exploration of sonic spaces in the rock 'n roll medium.

One complaint I have is reserved for heads who describe a particular version of say, Dew, or Wharf Rat, as "epic". The song was either performed "well" or in some unique way (or not, as happens most of the time - it's just well-done and not sloppy); or Jerry's solo was particularly sweet, but very little about a performance can be "epic." Rant over.

no Black Peter?

Drop the epic. These are songs about the human race. Me
AND you. Life AND death. The meaning of, "I guess it
doesnt matter anyway". or " a friend or 2 I love at hand" doesnt pull at the heart strings no matter how BAD it is?
We have some different views my friend. Different views...

who rates all the songs?
You do. I do.

Very pithy, my friend. These songs do pull at the heart strings, and I do like them all... well, almost all.

Thank god we all have different views. I enjoyed your POV.

Wow... you listed Lovelight, Black Peter and Schoolgirl. We must have very different taste in GD.

I also disagree that there aren't epic versions of Dew or Wharf. It's all in the interpretation. I certainly don't think you can just give it a thumbs-up or thumbs-down. There are standard solos, and there are epic, mind-blowing solos where Garcia finds new territory to explore. "Epic" might be the wrong word, since it suggests a long journey, but still.

I'm just not a Pig fan, esp. the long-winded raps do nothing for me. The basic tunes are cool. Black Peter is the "debbie-downer" of GD, must have been a come-down at a show.

As for "epic" - I prefer YOUR descriptions on Truckin' from above: "awesome", "classic and beautiful", "insane", "gorgeous", "blistering" -- all more descriptive than epic. Wagner's Ring Cycle is an epic... guess I'm ranting about over-use of the word.

See here how everything leads up to this day
And it's just like any other day that's ever been
Sun going up and then the sun it's going down ...

I think those are some of the most powerful lyrics they've got! I don't see it as a downer ... well, if you think of it only in context of a guy lying around dying of a fever, I can see that, but to me, those are profound if simple-seeming lyrics ... talk about philosophy in a nutshell.
